To get your brand recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, you need to be named inside the small set of sources those models trust and pull from — most often third-party listicles, review sites, and Reddit threads, not your own homepage. The work is to earn mentions on those exact pages, make your brand easy to extract in a single sentence, and keep your facts consistent everywhere AI can read them. Ranking #1 on Google is no longer the goal; being the answer is.

Here is the uncomfortable part. You can hold the top organic spot for your best keyword and still never get mentioned when a buyer asks ChatGPT "what's the best tool for X." The model doesn't read the whole web in real time. It pulls a handful of answer-shaped sources, blends them, and names a few brands. If you're not in that handful, you don't exist.

We built RedRank because this shift breaks most of what classic SEO taught us. Below is how AI actually picks sources, and a reproducible playbook to become one of them.

Why ranking #1 on Google no longer means AI recommends you

Ranking #1 on Google no longer guarantees an AI recommendation because AI assistants don't hand the user a list of ten blue links — they give one synthesized answer that names a few brands, and those brands are pulled from sources the model considers trustworthy and easy to quote.

A blue-link ranking rewards the page that best matches a query. An AI answer rewards the brand that the most sources agree on. Those are different games.

When someone Googles "best CRM for freelancers," they scan results and decide for themselves. When someone asks ChatGPT the same thing, the model decides for them and returns three names. The decision moves from the user to the model.

This is why a competitor with worse on-page SEO than you can still win the AI answer. They got named in the right Reddit thread and two listicles. The model saw consensus and repeated it.

This is the moment that matters: the model names brands and cites sources. The goal of AI search optimization is to be one of those names.

How ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews actually pick sources

AI assistants pick sources by rewriting your question into a search query, retrieving a small set of pages, and then favoring the ones that state a clear, quotable answer with named entities. They lean heavily on third-party pages — review roundups, comparison posts, and community discussions like Reddit — because those read as neutral consensus rather than self-promotion.

The flow is more mechanical than most people assume.

Step 1: The model rewrites your query

You ask a messy question. The model turns it into one or more clean search queries. "what should I use to send invoices as a freelancer" becomes something like "best invoicing software for freelancers." You don't control the rewrite, so you have to rank for the obvious version of the question.

Step 2: It retrieves a few sources, not the whole web

The system fetches a short list of pages for those queries — often the top organic results plus high-authority community pages. This is retrieval-augmented generation: the model grounds its answer in a small retrieved set. If your page isn't retrieved, it can't be cited.

Step 3: It favors answer-shaped, extractable content

The model prefers content where the answer is stated plainly and the brand is named as an entity. A sentence like "For freelancers, Wave and Invoicely are the most recommended free options" is easy to lift. A vague paragraph that never names anything is not.

Step 4: Reddit and listicles punch above their weight

Across AI answers, two source types show up constantly: independent listicles ("Top 10...") and Reddit threads. Reddit gets pulled often because it reads as real people comparing real options, and Google has a content-licensing deal with Reddit that surfaces those threads prominently. If your brand isn't mentioned in those threads, the model has no reason to name you.

Notice what gets cited: not the brand's own site, but the third-party pages that mention it. That's the surface area you have to win.

Classic SEO vs AI answer SEO: what changes

Classic SEO optimizes a page to rank for a keyword; AI answer SEO — also called answer engine optimization (AEO) or generative engine optimization (GEO) — optimizes your brand to be named and cited inside a synthesized answer. The first is about your URL's position. The second is about your brand's presence across the sources AI reads.

Most of your SEO fundamentals still help. But the scoreboard and several tactics change.

Dimension Classic SEO AI answer SEO (AEO / GEO)
Goal Rank your page #1 Get your brand named and cited in the answer
Unit that wins A URL A brand entity
Where the win happens Search results page Inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews
Top-cited sources Your own optimized pages Third-party listicles, review sites, Reddit
Click behavior User clicks through to you User often never clicks; reads the answer
Key signal Keywords + backlinks to your page Consensus + mentions of your brand across sources
Content shape Comprehensive, keyword-rich Answer-first, clearly extractable, names entities
How you measure Rankings, organic traffic Mentions, citations, share of AI answers

The takeaway: classic SEO gets you retrieved. AI answer SEO gets you recommended. You need both, but almost nobody is doing the second one on purpose yet — which is exactly the opening.

To optimize for AI search, earn mentions of your brand on the third-party pages AI cites, structure your own content so the answer is stated in the first two sentences, and keep your brand facts identical everywhere. Do these five things in order.

1. Find the questions your buyers actually ask AI

Start with the category questions a buyer types into ChatGPT before they know your name — "best [category] for [use case]," "[competitor] alternatives," "is [tool] worth it." These are different from your keyword list. They're conversational and comparison-driven.

Write them down. This list is your target set. Everything below is about getting named when these questions are asked.

2. Get mentioned on the sources AI already cites

Run the questions yourself, see which pages get cited, and go earn a mention on those exact pages. If a listicle ranks for "best [category]" and you're not on it, that's a direct, fixable gap — pitch the author, or get added through their update process.

This is where Reddit does heavy lifting. The threads AI pulls from are often years-old discussions still being read by the models. Being present in those threads, helpfully and honestly, is one of the highest-leverage moves in AI search. We go deep on this in Reddit SEO: Why Reddit Threads Outrank You on Google (and How to Get In Them).

A warning: do this without spamming. Drive-by promotion gets removed and can get you banned, which erases the mention entirely. The right way to turn threads into demand without torching your account is covered in Reddit for Business: How to Turn Threads Into Leads Without Getting Banned.

3. Make your own content answer-shaped

When the model does retrieve your page, give it something easy to lift. Put the direct answer in the first two or three sentences of every important page. Name yourself and your category plainly. Use clear headings phrased as questions.

This is the same reason this article opens with a direct answer — so an assistant can quote it verbatim. Comprehensive content still matters, but extractability is what gets you into the answer.

4. Keep your brand facts consistent everywhere

Models build an internal sense of what your brand is from everything they read. If your site, your LinkedIn, your listings, and third-party pages describe you three different ways, you read as fuzzy. State the same one-line description of who you are and who you're for, in the same words, across every property you control.

Consistency is a ranking signal you can fully control today, and most brands ignore it.

Mentions on respected, topical sites teach the model that your brand belongs in the category. This includes unlinked mentions — your brand name appearing as text on a trusted page still teaches the association. Aim for being talked about in the right rooms, not just linked from anywhere.

RedRank's AI SEO is built around exactly this loop: it finds the threads and pages AI learns from in your category, and helps you become one of the brands those sources name — so when a buyer asks ChatGPT, your name comes up.

The whole playbook in one view: the questions, who AI cites for them, and where your brand is missing. The gaps are your to-do list.

Run it yourself: the 10-minute citation test

The fastest way to understand your AI visibility is to run a citation test: ask ChatGPT or Perplexity a category question your buyers would ask, then write down which brands it names and which sources it cites. Do this before you change anything — it's your baseline.

Here's the exact process.

  1. Pick one buyer question, like "best [your category] for [your customer]."
  2. Ask it in ChatGPT (with web search on) and in Perplexity. Ask AI Overviews by Googling the same thing.
  3. Write down every brand named. Are you in the list? Where?
  4. Open the cited sources. Note the page type — listicle, review site, Reddit, vendor blog.
  5. For each cited source, check: does it mention your brand at all?

You'll usually find one of three things. You're not named because you're not in the sources. You're named but ranked behind competitors. Or you're invisible while a Reddit thread you've never seen is driving the whole answer.

Each result points to a specific fix from the playbook above. Repeat the test for your top five questions and you have a prioritized roadmap.

How to measure whether it's working

Measure AI search progress by tracking three things over time: how often your brand is mentioned in AI answers, how often you're cited as a source, and your share of answers versus competitors for your target questions. Rankings and traffic won't capture this — you need AI-specific measurement.

Doing this by hand means re-running your citation test on a schedule and logging results in a spreadsheet. That works at small scale and we recommend starting there.

To do it continuously, RedRank's Citations Tracking, now rolling out, monitors where AI models cite your brand across your target questions, and Prompt Tracking, now rolling out, shows how your brand shows up across the prompts buyers actually ask. The point is to turn "I think AI mentions us more now" into a number you can watch move.

The full measurement approach, including what to track and how often, is in How to Track Where AI Search Mentions and Cites Your Brand.

FAQ

How do I rank on ChatGPT?

You don't rank a page on ChatGPT the way you do on Google — you get your brand named in its answers by being mentioned across the third-party sources it retrieves, like listicles and Reddit threads, and by stating clear, quotable answers on your own pages.

How do I optimize content for AI search engines?

Lead every important page with a direct, one- to two-sentence answer to the question it targets, name your brand and category plainly, use question-style headings, and keep your brand description identical across the web so models read you as a consistent entity.

What is the difference between answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization?

They describe the same shift with slightly different emphasis: answer engine optimization (AEO) focuses on being the source of a direct answer, while generative engine optimization (GEO) focuses on influencing AI-generated responses overall. In practice the tactics overlap heavily.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?

Because your competitor is mentioned in the sources ChatGPT retrieved for that question and you aren't. Run the citation test, find the cited pages and threads, and earn a presence on them.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

It varies, but it's usually faster than traditional SEO once you appear in a source AI already cites, because the model can surface that mention as soon as it re-reads the page. New listicle placements and active Reddit threads can move things in weeks, not months.
